This kitchen design stuff is such a hot topic. I hope we keep it up! Robert, are there pictures of your kitchen somewhere? That lazy Susan sounds impressive. I would not be able to go high in this kitchen (windows) but I will keep it in mind for future reference. My stove will be here Friday or Saturday. Oh Boy!!! I have the gas company doing a neighborhood survey to see how many of us want gas.
I think my stove's name will be" Beauty." I am hoping he has a fabulous safety system already on - I am already going to have to deal with a thermostat repair and that is a bigger expence than I would have thought.
Clean and polish, that's what I'll be doing this weekend!

I see it this way: we are custodians of these hot beauties until the next owners come along. We owe these hot ones the thermostats they desire, the buff and polish they need....we need to give them the care that has eluded them only so we can enjoy them and pass them on,in good condition, to the next conservator. The money is important but geez, we'd be spending similar amounts on new less desireable goods. In my book, these ranges are still real bargains, even after we realize that we spent a bundle on a 50+ yr old stove ! One thing my stove does that other vices haven't done...it keeps me off the streets ! Photos of my kitchen.....nope. It is a truly bizarre kitchen.... imagine a dumbell shape....21feet long with one end being 8'10"wide and the other end being 7' wide all connected by a 5'8" wide 13'6" "handle". One end of the kitchen houses the fridge, range, sink and stainless counters. The opposite end houses the washer and dryer & very large granite tub sink...the "handle" that connects the two areas has stainless steel base cabinets, open shelving and a granite counter and opposite that granite counter is a fold down 8' long Formica counter used as a breakfast counter, work station, party service....the granite tub serves as giant ice bucket at parties, the granite counters are for rolling out doughs and beverage bar for parties...all highly convoluted in a 1939 International Style house, not for the timid of heart and mind. The functionality of this kitchen is unbeatable. One person can be working the range end doing stove top cooking while another person can be working the opposite end for preparing baked goods or....whatever. Two very distinct work areas, each with it's own sink but close enough to each other to feel as you're working together....like a good marriage, close but a bit of personal space. I'll get some photos together for you to check out.
-Pete my ebay #7584416990. I believe you can still access it - I have been. Beauty is a 1953 Copper 61AC with a solid copper Chambers hood and one thermowell pot. It lived in the same house through three owners until the thermostat broke and the current female of the home decided it was time to update (must not cook much...) Eric the Shipper has it in his truck (yikes!) I found his name on this site, googled it and there he was AND only a half day drive from my stove in Pittsburgh. Eric drives around picking up and delivering stuff so it could take a while, or NOT! For my lucky self it will take 10 days or so. I heard he put all the loose parts and the hood up in the cab with him...that's love (I hope!) Eric also had the best price - but he blanket wraps - not shrink wrap to a pallet. He calls himself a machine mover - jukeboxes and pinball machines. I love the idea of the individual trucker out there answering his own phone and doing it right!
I am trying to think of the best place to set the stove for cleaning and repair. It may end up in an office / extra bedroom place. In order to fit Beauty in the kitchen I would have to remove at least one cabinet (which I am dying to do - they are that dysfunctional) but I also wil need to apply flooring and for that I need to really commit and remove all the cabinets.- I want to have little arches in my toe kicks - so I'll need to linoleum to the wall I suppose. (Is this true Robert?) That will make it interesting to clean. Unlike Robert, I am not a clean as you go cook. In fact I am the use every implement for every meal and then recover. At least I make fabulous food. It worked out well when I was married because if I cooked (which I always did) my husband cleaned up!
The last owner of My stove sent me many email photos of the loose parts of the stove (he boxed anything that might shift) but he did not reduce the size and I am not so hot on this iMac - I am having a challenge bringing the size down for posting either here or on Flickr.

Hi Phoebe, Copper beauty AND the hood....impressive !!! Cleaning as you go is not an option for me, it's a compulsion...lol, not a good one ! I just hate an after mess so I follow the mania and clean. You will need to run the Linoleum wall to wall. Some flooring materials you can get away with just running to the cabiinets and there is nothing wrong with that, but it is a BETTER job running your material all the way to the edges. If you have open bases, certainly you need to run the material all the way...it would look nassssty any other way.
So I guess people have to make their litte leg-alike toe kick openings big enough to fit an arm or a vacuum into? They are really cute but a it of work eh? So I may not stoop and bend at the broiler but I'll sure make up for it on my knees at floor cleaning time! Decisions, decisions

I forgot to tell you my countertop is not granite. It's Wilson Art Laminate in Blackstar Granite. We did have it custom made from Home Depot.A story in itself!! I clean it with a product I get @ BB&B to keep it shiny. I'm a bull in a china closet and would chip everything with real granite!! My brother right now is having that problem with the boys.
In the 1940's there was a movement to build only round houses with round rooms....to avoid cleaning corners....but still there was bending over to pickup the dust bunnies. Kathryn Hepburn said that bending over kept her young.....
